Discovery of the Weapon Cache
On August 22, 2026, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, NDR, and WDR reported that German security authorities had discovered a weapon cache in a forest near Berlin. The cache contained two pistols, which dpa said showed signs of being placed by Russian intelligence services, as well as ammunition. Police disabled the handguns but left them intact at the site before placing the location under surveillance. Since the discovery, investigators have monitored the area for several months, but no one was seen approaching the site.
Investigations and International Cooperation
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that a suspect had been arrested in Romania. The individual is being investigated on charges of espionage and planning a violent attack that endangers the state. Dobrindt emphasized that German authorities are in contact with their Romanian counterparts regarding the suspect’s potential extradition. He described the case as an example of the high threat level under which Germany operates. The minister acknowledged that the investigation cannot rule out foreign powers being involved, but did not provide concrete evidence of Russian involvement.
Possible Russian Involvement
While Dobrindt did not confirm direct Russian involvement, he stressed that Germany is a daily target of hybrid warfare. He referenced the recent discovery of an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig Airport, which U.S. intelligence services suspect Russia. The Russian embassy in Berlin called the allegations a “hastily fabricated provocation” and criticized the “new wave of anti-Russian hysteria” in Germany.
Further Investigations
Dobrindt mentioned that the suspect is a “low-level agent” unaware of the command structure above him. Additionally, other operatives, including a Kazakh citizen, were detained this year and were similarly uninformed about the network they were part of. The investigations now focus on determining what measures can be taken against those involved in planned parcel bomb attacks in Romania.
