The Germany national football team mourns Ottmar Walter, one of the heroes of the 1954 Bern wonder. The former striker died after a long illness. Ottmar Walter was part of a generation that stood for a kind of values that are still more valuable today. He was one of the most successful German strikers of all time with 336 goals in 321 games for 1. FC Kaiserslautern. For the DFB team, he played 21 international games between 1950 and 1956 (10 goals). Alongside his brother Fritz, he was part of the legendary team that won 3-2 against Hungary in the final in Bern in 1954. Ottmar Walter was the third last living Bern hero, alongside Hans Schäfer and Horst Eckel, who died in 2017 and 2021, respectively. The 1. FC Kaiserslautern, which Ottmar Walter remained loyal to, despite the war-related changes to Cuxhaven SV and Holstein Kiel, was deeply affected. The former FCK chairman Stefan Kuntz said: "For us, this is a very sad day. Ottmar Walter was part of a generation that stood for a kind of values that are still more valuable today." The former DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach expressed himself similarly: "Ottmar Walter will not only be remembered by us all as an outstanding athlete, but also as a wonderful person who lived his life for down-to-earthness and humility." On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the entrance gate to the north stand at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion was renamed Ottmar-Walter-Tor. Additionally, Ottmar Walter received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on this round birthday.
