Per Mertesacker Confirms Talks with DFB
Per Mertesacker, the former 2014 World Cup winner, confirms talks with the German Football Association (DFB). The 41-year-old former center-back could soon be active again for the DFB.
What's happening?
Mertesacker was last considered a candidate for the position of DFB Managing Director, which will be vacant at the end of the year. The former center-back has already publicly expressed his interest in a position with the association. The possibility of a sabbatical was also discussed, with a start in early 2027 being possible.
Why is this important for Germany?
Mertesacker has eight years of experience leading the youth academy of FC Arsenal and has expertise in youth development. At present, Hannes Wolf is responsible for youth development, training, and education at the DFB. Klopp and Wolf know each other from their time at Borussia Dortmund, where Klopp trained the professionals and Wolf was active in the youth department.
What's next?
Klopp is the most important figure at the German Football Association (DFB) at present. It remains to be seen whether Mertesacker will actually be active again for the DFB. The next match for the German national team is scheduled for September 24, 2026, against the Netherlands.
Last result: Germany 1-1 Paraguay (2026-06-29). Recent form (last 5): 3W-1D-1L (DLWWW, most recent first). Next fixture: vs Netherlands (away, 2026-09-24).
