Ginter packs over World Cup callout: 'The bitterest of my career'
In an interview with kicker, Matthias Ginter, Freiburg's defender, opens up about his disappointment over being nominated for the German World Cup squad. He loses in the Europa-League final against Aston Villa and is only informed on Thursday.
Ginter wanted "nothing more to do with this season"
In preparation for the World Cup, Ginter hardly had a role in Julian Nagelsmann's plans as former national team coach. "I won't speak about the general way it has gone over three years. The time was actually planned differently, especially after all the leaks that were published beforehand, but I was only informed on Thursday, the day of the nomination.
In the midst of Freiburg's fan reception after the Europa-League final, Ginter had to deal with a great disappointment. "At first, I didn't really realize it. I just had to function. There was the fan reception, then an award here and there. And even during vacation, the kids want something from their dad," revealed the Freiburger.
"Only with the opening game of the World Cup did it become so clearly apparent to me – and because it was a package, the disappointment over the lost final came back as well.
During family vacation while the football World Cup was taking place in North America, Ginter tried not to think about football and move on from the season end. His clear conclusion: "I have already experienced disappointments in my career, but not in this package within twelve hours. I would like to say clearly that I wanted nothing more with this season, to put it behind me and look forward.
