German FA discusses Klopp successor – no agreement yet
Germany’s national team is still searching for a new coach. After Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation in June (1-1 draw vs Paraguay), the DFB has now spoken to Jürgen Klopp, but no decision has been made. Negotiations are proving complex, particularly due to Klopp’s existing advertising contracts.
What was discussed?
On Wednesday, DFB board members and other stakeholders met online. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf briefed participants on talks with Klopp in New York and with Oliver Mintzlaff, the boss of Red Bull, where Klopp currently works as Head of Global Soccer. According to sources, neither salary details nor potential compensation to Red Bull were discussed.
Why is the decision difficult?
A major hurdle is Klopp’s private advertising contracts. The DFB must determine whether the 59-year-old can continue working for rival companies as national team coach. Additionally, there are still details to resolve with Red Bull, whose contract runs until 2029. “Creative solutions” are being sought to release Klopp earlier.
When will a decision come?
The DFB plans to appoint Klopp until the 2030 World Cup. Mintzlaff will meet with Klopp in the US, either before or after the World Cup final on Sunday. The next international break begins on September 24 with the away match against the Netherlands. Until then, the situation remains unresolved.
